The new equipment provides better cancer detection and greater comfort during the test. Mercy–North Iowa is the first medical center in the state to use mammography machines with a remote control that allows the patient to operate the device while it is compressing her breast. Being in control of the device can mentally reduce some of the discomfort a woman experiences. “We know pain during the test is one of the reasons women are reluctant to get annual mammograms,” says Gary Swenson, M.D., director of breast imaging at Mercy–North Iowa. “We chose the new equipment based on its improved design that reduces the discomfort many women experience during a mammogram. We have been very pleased with the performance of the new machines. The images are better, as is the comfort level for patients.” How is it different?
